AOC’s Met Gala dress provokes comparisons between Chick-fil-A

For some, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez DN.Y., made a bold fashion statement at the small Met Gala when she wore a white dress with “Tax the Rich” written in red on the back … while others were just hungry.

Her dress at the New York City event Monday night went viral on social media for her not-so-subtle message about income inequality. It also caught the attention of online users who compared its lyrics to the Chick-fil-A brand.

Some Twitter users compared it to paper bags in the fast food chain.

“Who wore it better?” a user wrote on Twitter, along with a side-by-side image.

Others tweeted that it reminded them of the red letters in the company’s ads, in which the cows wrote the message, “Eat Mor Chikin.”

Aside from food comparisons, Ocasio-Cortez said the lyrics were about “maintaining a real conversation about equity and fairness in our system, and I think that conversation is particularly relevant when discussing the budget and the conciliation bill.”

A self-proclaimed Social Democrat, Ocasio-Cortez is one of the most prominent progressive voices in support of President Biden’s $ 3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package. He has repeatedly called for higher taxes on wealthier Americans to pay for progressive policy initiatives, such as climate-friendly infrastructure and expanding access to free health care.

The Met Gala is considered one of the most exclusive social events in the world, usually attracting celebrities and influencing people from all over the world. Tickets for the Met Gala cost at least $ 30,000, The Associated Press reported, although it was unclear whether Ocasio-Cortez bought a ticket.

During an interview on the red carpet, Ocasio-Cortez noted that she and the dress designer, Aurora James, discussed “what it means to be working-class black women at the Met.”

“And we said, we can’t play, but we have to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions, and while the Met is known for their show, we should talk about it,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

DE BLASIO attends the red carpet of MET GALA – YEARS AFTER RIDICULATION

Other prominent figures to attend the Met Gala included New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who made an appearance Monday night despite shunning and ridiculing the high society event.

De Blasio was caught stepping on the red carpet with his wife, Chirlane McCray, and son, Dante, after saying “not my cup of tea” in 2019.

“It’s an elite meeting, I’m not an elite type. Really, let’s make it really simple, it’s just not my thing,” the mayor said at the time. “This is the kind of place where the elite go and like to be with each other, and I have a different approach.”
