Earlier this month, Rivian reached an important milestone. The company’s Environmental Protection Agency put the two vehicles one step closer to the official launch. Rivian has now reached another important milestone.
In a tweet seen by , Founder and CEO of Rivian, RJ Scaringe announced on Tuesday the company produced its first R1T EV for a customer. “After months building pre-production vehicles, this morning our first customer vehicle left our production line at Normal,” Scaringe wrote on Twitter. “I can’t wait to put them in the hands of our customers!”
Getting to this point has been a journey through Rivian. The company initially planned to start deliveries of the R1T in 2020, but was forced to delay the truck when it failed to get its factory, a former Mitsubishi plant, reorganized quickly enough. The coronavirus pandemic only added to the car’s problems, forcing it to push the launch of the R1T and R1S from the to the. “Everything from facility construction, to equipment installation, to the supply of vehicle components (especially semiconductors) has been affected by the pandemic,” Scaringe wrote at the time.
But even given these setbacks, the R1T paves the way for consumers ahead of Tesla and. These vehicles will not debut until early 2022.
