Liris is still not out of the surprise and grief that overwhelms him so his relatives went through. For a moment he thought he was losing both women. In a video that went viral on WhatsApp chats, Gina is seen under the bus next to the body of her daughter, who was in the fifth semester of her medical degree at the University of Guayaquil.
“Imagine how they leave families devastated by these facts,” Liris comments.
After 14:00 on Friday 10 September, Gina and Elizabeth were walking along the sidewalk next to various appliance outlets, after shopping in this sector. Gina’s husband had advanced in a vehicle with the items purchased.
“There was no pedestrian liability at all. A witness said he was walking behind them, overtaking them because he was in a bit of trouble and arriving first at the stop (of the city service buses). Then this boy sees that the bus made a maneuver at an irresponsible speed and gets on the sidewalk “, says Andrés Escobar, a relative of the victims, who helps with the legal procedures.
“Friday was my cousin and then sadly it was someone else, and families continue to be destroyed for irresponsibility.”
The bus of the Saucinc Transport Company SA got on the sidewalk, overturned a traffic signal, struck the two women and crashed into the facade of a business. “The driver of the line 89 unit has left the scene of the accident,” Milton Erazo, a member of the Guayaquil Traffic and Mobility Agency (ATM), said on the day of the accident.
Family, friends and acquaintances are calling for this case not to go unpunished. Several of them posted the photo and full name of a person whom they identified as the driver who escaped from the crash site: “Help us find him. That guy was the cause of the death of Elizabeth Véliz Pazmiño. (If) they know something, don’t forget to give us information internally. ” at the publish Washington FFI names and surnames are read
The digital records of the company that owns the bus involved include a driver with the names and surnames of the person indicated by the relatives of the victims. In his driving history he has 27 of the 30 points of his license (type D). It has thirteen paid citations and 3 canceled ones, from the year 2000 to 2019.
Violations include exceeding the speed limit, driving without a license, leaving passengers in prohibited areas, not wearing a seat belt, for example.
The UNIVERSE requested an interview with the company Saucinc SA, but there was no response. The day the tragedy occurred, the company posted a statement on its Twitter account in which it reported that it is working with the authorities to clarify the facts.
The bus involved is one of the electric mics the company bought a few years ago. It has the number 0833 on its body and the numbers GBO-8815 appear on its plate. According to the traffic records available until last September 13, its last technical technical inspection, before the Traffic and Mobility Agency (ATM) of Guayaquil, was carried out on March 3, 2020 (corresponding to the first review annual), ie 18 months ago. There are no more records of this and this year.
According to the vehicle inspection schedule for public transport listed on the ATM website, cars with the plate ending in digit 5 must go through the first overhaul in April and the second overhaul at in October.
Fernando Amador, director of Public Transport at the ATM, explains that until 2019 the institution demanded the two annual reviews.
“In 2020 due to the terrible pandemic the decision was taken, approved by the Cantonal Council, that during this year a single technical vehicle review is done, for 2021 the same thing was applied, the problem is that it is not yet approved This week it will have to be approved in a second debate, where a vehicle technical review for 2021 will be ratified, “said Amador, who added that carriers have until the end of the year to comply with the single review and which in 2022 will be analyzed if we return to the two revisions.
However, the official notes that despite this flexibility, homeowners should bring their vehicles to inspection as soon as possible.
“The ideal is that (the technical overhaul of the vehicle) should have been done much earlier, at the beginning of the year, in the middle of the year. The circumstances are varied, in some cases economic, in other cases due to difficulties of the owners who have died or been ill, ”says Amador.
The director of Public Transport of the ATM of Guayaquil says that the owners of the buses have the responsibility to give the maintenance to the units beyond the official controls, like the technical inspection vehicular that realize in his center of the road in Daule.
So how does the ATM know that carriers do maintenance without a self-assessment? How does the lack of maintenance affect a vehicle, whatever the make, model, type or modality, if any?
“Obviously, if there is no corrective or preventive maintenance, the team, whatever it is, may be more likely to fail,” Amador replies. (I)
