Vaccine skeptics are promoting a new and strange “treatment” for coronavirus.

According to reports, Facebook and Twitter anti-vaxxers have sung praises of povidone iodine, which is often sold under the brand name Betadine.
Betadine is a topical iodine-based treatment that is most often used as an antibacterial to treat cuts and scrapes.

In the “Covid-19 Answer” section of their website, the company lists an answer to the question “Can I use Betadine antiseptics to kill coronavirus?”
The answer listed says, “No. Betadine antiseptic first aid products have not been approved to treat coronavirus. Betadine® antiseptic first aid products should only be used to help prevent infections from minor cuts, scratches and burns, ”says the company. “Betadine antiseptics have not been shown to be effective for the treatment or prevention of Covid-19 or any other virus.”
Betadine does cause a sore throat, but the company notes that the product is also not helpful in preventing coronavirus. Sore throat gargles only include 0.5% povidone-iodine. The first aid cleaner contains 10% povidone-iodine.
Oral cultures such as Betadine and Listerine are currently being studied and have shown some success in altering three coronavirus strains, although these studies have only dealt with tissue samples, not real humans. The manufacturer of Listerine has also claimed that its product has not been shown to be effective in preventing coronavirus.
Side effects of iodine poisoning can include kidney failure, abdominal pain, potentially bleeding diarrhea, fever, cough, and delirium.
