Cibao Grand Theater is now called Johnny Pacheco Regional Grand Theater

The Chamber of Deputies passed a bill designating Johnny Pacheco to the Cibao Grand Theater in the city of Santiago.

The initiative of law was proposed by the deputy of the Party of the Dominican Liberation, Héctor Ramirez, and emphasizes the contributions made by Pacheco to Latin music, and in addition that is a native citizen of the city of Santiago.

Among its considerations, the legislative piece highlights that Pacheco was a renowned Dominican musician, flutist, composer, arranger, conductor, and producer; creator of the term “salsa” for the tropical music genre.

The deputy also highlights that Johnny Pacheco was the co-founder of the legendary orchestra “La Fania All Star”, where great performers such as Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades and Héctor Lavoe shone.

It also indicates that in the late fifties, he was part of the ensemble of pianist Charlie Palmieri and in 1960, formed his first orchestra called Pacheco and his Charanga.

In his prolific artistic career Pacheco won the Grammy Award Lifetme Achievement, and many of his productions were recognized by the Latin Grammys.

The Great Regional Theater of the Cibao was inaugurated the 16 of August of 1995. It is architectonic twin of National Theater Eduardo Brito and was constructed by the architect Teófilo Carbonell, who was inspired by several international theaters.

The Gran Teatro de la Cibao, now the Gran Teatro de la Cibao Johnny Pacheco, is a monumental work with four rooms, which are: Sala Restauració, Sala Divina Gómez, Sala Eduardo Brito and Sala Julio Alberto Hernández.
