A conservative group filed an ethical complaint against Rep. The American Accountability Foundation argued in its complaint that it had accepted a lavish gift of admission to the event “without having a permitted exemption.” The Conservative watchdog claimed that if he bought a ticket to the event with campaign funds, he also breached the rules of the Federal Electoral Commission.
The Ocasio-Cortez office said in a statement to NBC News, “We are confident that we comply with all ethical standards.”
The New York rep made headlines after arriving at the event in a white dress with the words “Tax the Rich” written on the back.
“When we talk about supporting working families and when we talk about having a fair tax code, this conversation is often taking place between working and middle class people (on the) floor of the senate,” Ocasio-Cortez said during the ‘act while explaining his attire, according to CNN. “I think it’s time we brought all the classes into the conversation.”
The Progressive immediately received the backlash from people who noted that the legislature known for advocating for the working class was attending an event that cost $ 35,000 per person, according to the New York Times. The tables range from $ 200,000 to $ 300,000.
Ocasio-Cortez defended his attendance at social media posts on Tuesday.
“BEFORE anyone starts to get out: New York elected officials are regularly invited to attend the Met because of our responsibilities in overseeing the city’s cultural institutions that serve the public. I was a of the attendees, ”he said in his message.
