Yesterday, Apple announced its new flagship iPhones: the iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. But while the live stream of Apple’s announcement was full of detail, a few things were left out.

Fortunately, we’ve learned a little more from Apple’s updated website, including dimensions and weight, some information on specifications, and the range of older iPhone models that will survive the abandonment following the introduction of a new flagship.

Thicker and heavier

The new iPhones are heavier than their immediate predecessors and are also a bit thicker. For example, the iPhone 12 weighed 5.78 ounces, but the iPhone 13 weighed 6.14 ounces. The iPhone 12 Pro was 6.66 ounces, but the iPhone 13 Pro is 7.19 ounces. This is maintained across the line. And the iPhone 13 is 0.25mm thicker than the 12; similar thickness differences are also universal.

This added increase may be mainly due to larger batteries: Apple said it reactivated the internal components of iPhones to make room for batteries. Camera systems can also play an important role.

The same old RAM

Apple has occasionally hit the amount of RAM found in its iPhones with new iterations, but that’s not the case this year. While Apple doesn’t normally release the amount of RAM a device has, MacRumors found references to the RAM settings of new phones in the Xcode development tool manufactured by Apple. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini have 4GB of RAM and the Pro models have 6GB, the same as last year’s iPhones.

The new iPhone line

When Apple introduces a new iPhone, it usually brings to light at least one previous model, sometimes keeping others as lower-cost entry points into the iPhone’s product line.

According to Apple’s online store, the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 11 and iPhone SE will survive. But it looks like the iPhone XR, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max previously available had been removed.

This lineup may change when new iPhones make a reservation on Friday, but we doubt it.
