Launch of Google Photos Material You, no dynamic color

Outside of workspace apps, Google’s camera, clock, contacts, and phone have already been updated with the company’s new design language. Google Photos is the latest application to get Material You, even though it’s a work in progress.

The most notable change is the higher bottom bar that allows for a tablet-shaped selection indicator. This highlight (and others) is blue, with Google Photos still not taking advantage of the dynamic color. This is similar to the current Google Phone material you review, but will likely change in the future for Pixel owners.

Elsewhere, the app bar is now flat and merges with the background while the buttons are “Favorites”, “Utilities”, “Archive” i “Bin” from the Library tab they lose their layout for a high, full look. This change also applies to album covers that now feature more rounded corners.

This increase in curvature also applies to the image / video editor tool carousel. Finally, a “Search”, the upper field is now pill-shaped.

Version 5.59 is being implemented through the Play Store with the Google Photos material you redesigned. The update is not yet widely available. This new look joins the delightful home screen widget “Your memories” introduced in August for all versions of Android.
