Thousands of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) employees are expected to seek exemptions from the city’s vaccine warrant as officers file a lawsuit against the city.
According to the Washington Post“Approximately 3,000 employees” are expected to seek exemptions from the city’s mandate, which requires vaccination of city employees in early October. People can apply for exemptions for medical or religious reasons. According to the Publication, the vast majority request religious exemptions.
“If these figures are maintained, nearly a quarter of the LAPD staff will try to avoid vaccination,” the Publication reported.
“We have seen several members of our staff who have applied for the intention to have an exemption, either on the basis of a medical belief or a sincere religious belief,” LAPD chief Michel Moore told the Los Angeles Police Commission.
“The department will wait for the city to provide instructions regarding the interpretation and what will happen to these intentions to present,” he added.
The news coincides with a lawsuit filed Saturday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by six LAPD agents, which claims the warrant “violates workers’ constitutional rights to privacy and legal process and asks the court to offer an immediate and permanent relief from the requirement, ”As the Los Angeles Times reported.
The complaint adds that one of the people “could not claim a medical or religious exemption.” Others have already contracted and recovered from the virus and have natural immunity, leaving no reason to get started, which the mandate does not take into account.
There are similar concerns across the country. A Florida firefighter, Maria Bernard, spoke about those concerns and killed the vaccine warrants during Governor Ron DeSantis’ (R-FL) press conference Monday in Newberry, Florida.
Bernard, an Orange County firefighter for 17 years, explained that she and her husband, who is also the first responder, have already recovered from the coronavirus, although they are subject to a County Council warrant. Orange requiring thousands of union and non-union employees to be vaccinated by Sept. 30.
“If this term continues, we will not only lose freedom of choice, but we will lose our jobs and our livelihoods,” he warned.
