Anthony Mackie will star in the live adaptation of the video game Twisted Metal

Anthony Mackie will star John Doe in a live television adaptation of the video game Twisted Metal.

The 42-year-old actor will be executive producer of the collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, which will be in half-hour episodes, Deadline reported.

“We’re thrilled to have Anthony Mackie on board,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation. “His ability to mix comedy, action and drama is perfect for the Twisted world we’re creating.”

Glenn Adilman, a Sony television executive, said the phenomenal work of the New Orleans native over the years made him stand out as the only actor who could play such a complex, funny and compelling character as John Doe.

“Fortunately for us, he agreed” to play the role, Adilman said of Mackie.

Twisted Metal is a comic action game based on an original take on Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with the character of Doe as a milkman who speaks quickly in a course of vehicular violence in the middle of a post-apocalyptic environment.

The game was originally released in 1995.

An exhibition for the game could be seen at Sony’s 2010 E3 press conference in 2010
