Although the world celebrated yesterday the legacy of service to the neighbor of the Puerto Rican baseball star Roberto Clemente Walker, his physical legacy suffers the onslaught of the passage of time and economic change .

On the one hand, the deteriorating state of the Roberto Clemente Sports City, the most iconic public work named after the former Pittsburgh Pirates player, is well known. But, on the other hand, his personal and family legacy, his house and that of his widow in the Urbanización Sant Agustí, also falls into trouble.

Last week, the Oriental Bank filed a lawsuit in the Court of First Instance of San Juan against the succession of Vera Cristina Zabala Serrano, Climent’s widow and who died in November 2019, to obtain the execution of the mortgage of the residence of what was the residence of the family.

According to the documents, the bank “has made collection arrangements, which have been unsuccessful” for the payment of the debt set at $ 255,290.21 under a $ 400,000 mortgage in 2003 with RG Premier Bank at an interest rate of 6,250%. After the bankruptcy of RG, Oriental assumed its assets credits.

The defendants are the succession of Zabala Serrano, that is, the three children she bore with Clemente: Luis Roberto, Roberto Enrique and Roberto, Jr.

Clemente Walker, who is probably the most recognized Puerto Rican sports figure in the world, died on December 31, 1972, when the plane he was traveling to Nicaragua crashed with humanitarian aid for the victims of an earthquake in its capital, Managua.

Yesterday, September 15, Roberto Clemente’s Day was celebrated in the Major League Baseball amid the call for his number, the 21st, to be withdrawn as a tribute to his career.
