A 17-year-old died in a Highway 189 crash near the Deer Creek Reservoir

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah – A teenage driver died Friday afternoon in a 3-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 189 near the Deer Creek swamp.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the 17-year-old was driving a Honda Civic heading north at mile 24, about a mile south of Charleston, around 1:30 p.m., when his vehicle overturned on the side right of the road. He over-corrected, getting into oncoming traffic and laterally cleaned a Subaru Crosstrek.

The Civic turned and was hit next to the driver by a Toyota Sienna minivan heading south.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the Subaru were not injured and those in the minivan were taken to hospitals in the area to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed in both directions for about three hours.

UHP said it was unknown why the driver went off the road initially.

His name was not disclosed.
