A 52-year-old New Jersey man is hospitalized with COVID-19 despite being completely vaccinated
- Francisco Cosme received the unique Johnson & Johnson vaccine
- On March 6, he was given the vaccine at the Javits Center in New York
- People are considered protected two weeks after getting vaccinated
- On April 1, he began to show symptoms of COVID-19 and was confirmed to be positive
- Last week his condition worsened and he was taken to JFK Medical Center
- The J&J vaccine is 72% effective in the US, meaning 28 out of 100 will still be infected
A New Jersey man is fighting for his life in the hospital with COVID-19, despite being vaccinated against the virus.
Francisco Cosme, 52, was vaccinated with the unique Johnson & Johnson vaccine on March 6: he was traveling from his home in Edison, New Jersey to Manhattan, to give him a mouthful.
The vaccine is considered effective after two weeks and Cosme continued to follow the CDC’s advice on social distancing and facial masks.
Still, her daughter, Michelle Torres, 31, told the New York Post she fell ill on April 1st.

“He had a cough, a fever, chills, everything,” he told the newspaper.
Torres drove her father to a clinic where she tested positive for COVID-19 and was told to quarantine her for ten days.
His condition continued to deteriorate and last week he noticed his father struggling to breathe and called 911.
Cosme was given oxygen and taken by ambulance to John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Union City, New Jersey.
Torres said his father was in critical condition and was being treated for pneumonia.
“I try to keep it together, every day you don’t know what’s going on,” he told the newspaper.
“The doctor said they did everything they could do and it’s up to him to fight and depend on God.”
Torres told the Post that her mother, husband and children have also tested positive for the virus.
We survived all year without him [the vaccine] – doing all the things we’re supposed to do: distance ourselves socially, wash our hands and mask ourselves, ’he said.
“It’s crazy and we need answers.”
He did not specify if he had pre-existing conditions.
The Javits Center is one of the largest mass vaccination sites established in the New York area
None of the COVID vaccines currently being administered are 100% effective.
On April 4, Ashley Allen, 31, tested positive for COVID, despite receiving her Johnson & Johnson dose vaccine at the Javits Center on March 10.
However, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is believed to be 100% effective in preventing serious cases of COVID, such as Cosme.
“The vaccine was highly effective in preventing hospitalization and death in people who became ill,” the CDC currently states on its website.
“No one who received COVID-19 at least 4 weeks after receiving the J & J / Janssen vaccine had to be hospitalized.”
