A baby dies from COVID-19 in Louisiana, according to LDH

RED STICK, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) officials report the death of a child by COVID-19 on Wednesday, August 25th.

According to authorities, the baby was less than a year old.

This is the first state death of a COVID-19 child in six months, according to LDH.

State health officials on Wednesday reported 110 deaths from COVID-19 and the highest single-day death toll on Tuesday, Aug. 24 with 139 Louisiana residents.

LDH officials say a total of 11 children under the age of 18 have died from COVID-19 in Louisiana.

On Wednesday, 31% of recently reported COVID-19 cases in Louisiana were in children under 18, according to LDH.

“Every death of COVID-19 in Louisiana has been painful, but the loss of such a young child, who has not yet been vaccinated, is tragic and difficult to remember the difficult circumstance we live in all of Louisiana. Right now , we see the youngest hospitalized. They are getting sicker than on the previous climb and unfortunately some of them may die. This week we have already confirmed 6,146 cases of COVID in children and last week there were 63 pediatric cases of COVID hospitalized. Even children who are not hospitalized or are very ill are contagious, “said Gov. John Bel Edwards. “The Delta variant, which now accounts for all COVID cases in our state, is much more contagious than previous COVID strains, as evidenced by our tense hospitals. We have hope in the form of safe and effective vaccines, but only if many more of us are eligible and able to take them and only if we slow the spread of this disease also through masking and distancing. All Louisians, regardless of age or health, are worthy of our care and attention. Anyone lost by this virus, young or old, leaves a hole in the fabric of our communities. “

“This news is heartbreaking,” he said. Dr. Joseph Kanter, state health officer. “And it is a tragic reminder that the figures we report daily are also our children, friends and neighbors, and that no one is immune to the impact of this virus. The best way to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and young children who do not meet the requirements to receive the vaccine is to vaccinate ourselves and wear a mask. It’s really that simple. “
