Queens resident Micheline Frederick says a squirrel attacked her while standing on her own forward incline. Apparently, the animal climbed up its leg and began to bite it. Frederick, who suffered bruises and cuts after the attack, said the squirrel “chewed” their fingers and refused to let go. When the animal finally gave way, the ground was covered in blood.

“We’re fighting in the snow and there’s blood everywhere and my fingers are chewing and not letting go,” Frederick told WCBS-TV. “It finally stopped and there I had a big bloody mess.”
And Frederick is not the only victim of the squirrel attacks. Other residents have talked about the strange behavior of the animals, claiming they tried to climb their legs several times and even jumped from a mailbox to attack. A resident stated she was just walking up the driveway when a squirrel jumped on her and bit her arm. He managed to get the animal out of it before it caused any additional damage.
It’s a really weird set of circumstances, and while the first thought might be that the animals must be rabid, it’s worth noting that rabies in squirrels is quite rare. The animals might be rabid, but they won’t know it at all until they can be captured. Meanwhile, some of the squirrel bites have been treated against rabies as a precaution.
Victims of the squirrel attacks have hired a trapper to catch the animals and relocate them, but at the time of the report, none of the squirrels had taken the bait. For now, local residents will only need to be extra careful when they see one of the creatures or try to avoid them altogether. Maybe they’ll become a little kinder once the year is over. After all, 2020 has been tough for all of us.
