A man in West Texas was arrested for allegedly forcing a National Guard convoy carrying COVID-19 vaccines off the road and having 11 members of the guard at gunpoint, authorities reported.
Larry Harris, 66, of Arizona, is accused of taking three National Guard vans out of a gas station, and then complained to police that he did so because he believed a kidnapped woman and child were inside. of the vans, according to police.
After successfully stopping the convoy, Harris identified himself as a detective and demanded that he search the vehicles, Idalou police chief Eric Williams said in a statement.
Harris ordered members of the guard to get out of their vehicles at gunpoint, authorities reported.
Police said Harris was speaking erratically when he was arrested. It was not immediately clear what led him to believe that the victims of the kidnapping were being transported in vans.
Harris faces several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, illegal restraint of 11 members of the National Guard and impersonation of a public official.
He was jailed Tuesday in jail on $ 44,000 bail.
