PAPILLION, Nebraska (KETV) – A Nebraska family thought they were safe from COVID-19 after fighting it, but months later, they all faced the virus once again.
Chuck Conboy Sr., 67, says he had a terrifying time walking to a holiday lights festival in November. Then he, his wife and children tested positive for COVID-19.
“I walked about 200 feet and couldn’t breathe. And I mean, it was a feeling of panic. I’ve never had anything like it in my life, “said Conboy.
The family fully recovered from the virus. But after nine weeks, Conboy says he started to feel very tired and tested positive for COVID-19 again.
“I woke up … and I had a fever. It jumped up to 102 degrees, which for me is high. I thought, ‘Oh my God, no more,’ ”he said.
Conboy says the second infection is much worse than the first.
“He hit me like a truck and this time he knocked me down. In fact, this is the first day (new day) that I return to half of normalcy. If you asked me yesterday, I didn’t even know where he was, “he said.
Conboy’s wife and children are also ill again and he says his symptoms also apply more quickly.
“As for the symptoms, they were much more severe and settled quickly. Taste and smell disappeared immediately. The temperature rose immediately, and not just me. That was the whole family, ”Conboy said.
With the restrictions in Nebraska, Conboy is worried that the virus will rise again.
Dr. Mark Rupp with Nebraska Medicine says repeated infections like Conboys are rare, but have not been heard of. Some people who receive COVID-19 may develop a natural immunity that lasts for several months, but there is no specific evidence that is the case for everyone.
“This may be one of the explanations: that people with very mild illnesses do not have such a vigorous immune response and do not have such a lasting response,” Rupp said.
