A Florida man was arrested after a multi-fatal crash Saturday on I-80

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – A person has been arrested after a car accident that claimed the lives of two people Saturday morning in Lincoln.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:25 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 80, near the 27th Street interchange in Lincoln. Units from the Nebraska State Patrol, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the Lincoln Police Department and Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. The crash affected eight vehicles all traveling west on Interstate 80.

Following the preliminary investigation, investigators believe a vehicle semi-driven by 50-year-old Yorkwind Crawford, north of Miami Beach, Florida, ended up with another vehicle east of the 27th Street interchange. The semi continued to drive west for more than a mile and attacked several passenger vehicles west of the 27th Street interchange.

A father and son, who were traveling together in a Chevrolet Colorado van, both died in the crash west of 27th Street. The victims have been identified as Mark Kaipust, 41, and Taylor Kaipust, 7. of La Vista. Five more people were taken to the Bryan Health West campus with non-fatal injuries.

Investigators believe speed and inattention were the main causes of the crash. The driver of the semi, Yorkwind Crawford, has been arrested for two counts of motor vehicle homicide. He was housed in the Lancaster County Jail. The accident is still being investigated.
