Rome – A giant sewer that opened on Friday in a hospital parking lot in Naples, Italy, forced the temporary closure of a nearby residence for convalescent patients with COVID-19 due to the interruption of services.
The incident did not affect the Hospital de la Mar, and according to firefighters there were apparently no injuries. Three cars sank in the sewer.
The local hospital district said the 20-meter-deep, 2,000-square-meter sewer opened at dawn. Fire chief Ennio Aquilino told SkyTG 24 television that the cause of the implosion could have been groundwater infiltration as a result of recent heavy rains.
The six people convalescing at the residence were moved to other facilities.
Regional Governor Vincenzo De Luca said the residence will reopen in the coming days once the electricity and water services are restored.
