Republicans had been riding for months for their chances of remembering Newsom. Beyond these controversies, Elder is the subject of an investigation by the California Fair Trade Practices Commission into allegations that it did not properly disclose aspects of its finances and business.
Elder has largely kept his head down, but has posted a tweet accusing his opponents of using “the policy of personal destruction.”
“These are savage allegations. People do not enter public life precisely because of this kind of policy of personal destruction. I will not dignify it with an answer, it is under me,” he added in a statement after Datig introduced the his complaint.
Datig told The Hill that “it’s not me who has to come clean, yes,” while Democrats give the opportunity to turn Elder into the face of the retreat.
Operatives say this controversy over a figure with wider name recognition than any other candidate gives Newsom the opportunity to run against a specific person rather than an extensive field of unknown or uncompetitive candidates. .
