HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Jeans in Group 1C, those 50 years of age or older, can get the COVID-19 vaccine. But there are people in Group 1A who said they are still struggling to get that first dose.

Jennifer Darosa loves being a nurse. Work with a special group of patients.

“I’m in health care at home. I work with immunocompromised pediatric patients, most of them on a trace and have ventilators,” Darosa said.

Take all precautions, especially with COVID-19.

“I’m more concerned about patients than about me. I mean, of course, I’m worried about myself, but I take every precaution. I keep my circle small, but it’s really about them,” he said.

But despite working with vulnerable patients, Darosa has not yet been able to get the vaccine. He told ABC13 that he has been trying to get the vaccine since December.

“I think it’s crazy. I don’t get it,” Darosa said.

Darosa said she knows other health workers who are treating the same thing, even as they wait for the vaccine. Darosa belongs to group 1A, which was one of the first to be vaccinated and now 1C people can get it.

“I don’t understand how 1A isn’t completely vaccinated, but we’ll open it up to more people. It doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.

Stephen Williams is the director of the Houston Department of Health. He says if anyone in group 1A has trouble getting the vaccine to contact them directly.

“We want to do 1A. We definitely want to do 1B, too. It’s important. We know it’s not a perfect process,” Williams said.

Williams went on to say that this is why the health department is there.

“As a health department, we serve as a safety net that includes connecting people with providers,” Williams said.

Fortunately, Darosa had an appointment and is scheduled to get the dose on March 20th.

“I’m satisfied. I’m super excited because I never want to be the reason no one gets sick, ever. Especially patients who can’t recover,” Darosa said.
