A huge fire in the northern Bexar County apartment complex is still smoking

SAINT ANTHONY – A fire that destroyed an entire apartment building in the far north of Bexar County continues to burn.

The fire broke out Thursday around 1 p.m. in Cortland View in the TPC apartments, located on block 4000 of TPC Parkway.

In the early hours of Friday morning, flames and smoke could still be seen coming out of the ruins.

People living there told KSAT that they saw the fire explode from the second floor of the building moments after they received an alert telling them to turn off the water heaters.

Firefighters evacuated about 50-60 people from that building and at least one nearby.

“It’s been horrible,” Irene Loera said. “I am in building 7 right next to building 6 which burned down. We were evacuated earlier. We just stood out here watching it burn. “

Loera said she also spent part of the night inside her car, although a temporary shelter was opened for evacuees at Johnson High School.

Announcements

A supervisor from the fire department told KSAT on Friday morning that a total of 130 apartments had been damaged or destroyed.

There were also at least seven cars parked next to the building that were visibly burned.

Firefighters say water cuts in the area have dried up the hydrants inside the apartment complex.

They had to bring water to the trucks to fight the fire.

Part of the burning building ended up collapsing Thursday night.

No injuries have been reported so far.

Investigators in the Bexar County Fire Commissioner’s Office will study the cause of the fire once it has been extinguished.
