On Wednesday, a huge fireball was spotted falling from the sky and crashing into China’s northwestern city of Yushu. In footage of the incident shared on YouTube, a giant fireball flickering through the sky can be seen illuminating the dark sky in southern China.
In multiple images captured by locals, a fireball, suspected of a meteorite, illuminates the sky and plunges into Nanggian County, Qinghai Province, northwest China. Locals have reported hearing loud bangs and the incident is said to have occurred at 7am on 23 December.
According to a report by Daily Mail, it is not yet clear what the flaming sphere is, but local media suggest the unidentified object could be a bright meteor. Some experts also suggest that the object was a fireball, an extremely bright meteor. Yu Jun, chief writer of Chinese science website Guokr, spoke to the media, saying it looked like a fireball. Several fragments of meteorites could also have fallen somewhere in the area.
Fortunately, no causality has been reported.
According to NASA, as of December 19, more than 50,000 meteorites have been found on Earth. Meteorites often fly over the Earth, but it is rare for them to fall to the surface.

Today there have been two strange and sensational events in Qinghai, China, and Marshall County, Alabama, USA. A meteorite makes a fall in Qinghai while in Alabama a meteorite shines in the skies. We will need astrologers to help us make sense of strange events. https://t.co/Csrpk8yuCR— jerryo98 (@jaydchilly) December 23, 2020
