More than a dozen law enforcement vehicles were at the scene as dozens of officers and deputies roamed the area.

Gonzalez said the shooting occurred when two lawmakers responded to a report of a suspicious person in the neighborhood. He said when they arrived, a man pulled out a gun and started firing at them. He said one of the MPs was hit several times and the other was able to shoot. He said the man fled the scene.

The sheriff said the injured MP, who only identified MP 35 as Barragan, suffered injuries to his hands, cheek and back. Gonzalez said Barragan appears stable and is expected to be fine.

Gonzalez said the injured deputy has been in the sheriff’s office for 18 months, but worked at a different agency for eight years before becoming a Harris County deputy.

The sheriff said he believes Martinez had two arrest warrants open at the time of the shooting.
