A 17-year-old boy who went missing while making snowmobiles in Canada has been hailed for his survival skills after building a snow cave to survive.

The teenager from British Columbia, whose name has not been released, got lost around 6.15pm on Saturday when he was separated from his group near Spanish Lake.

The quick-thinking survivor parked his sleigh in a visible area near a wooded area, while his family and friends returned to the parking lot and called South Cariboo Search and Rescue, which alerted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“This young man did everything right after things went wrong,” the southern Cariboo SAR said on Facebook.

Earlier this month, a California teen survived nearly 30 hours after being trapped in the snow on a mountain in Utah and a snow cave was built to shelter him in another incident.

Nicolas Stacy-Alcantara, who is also 17, was visiting from Fresno to visit an ex-girlfriend and went on a day trip on January 2nd.

“I love hiking, it clears my head,” he said at a news conference at the University of Utah.

He drove an Uber to a canyon east of Salt Lake City, carrying six peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and 40 ounces of water. He planned to be out all day and get back in time for dinner after walking 16 miles from Millcreek Canyon to Park City.

Stacy-Alcantara ended up trapped in the snow and also dug a snow cave, where she slept through the night.

Eventually, he found other hikers who had a satellite phone and got out of the cannon by helicopter.
