A 3-year-old Missouri boy, who had been diagnosed with coronavirus, was partially paralyzed after suffering a stroke and, although, will probably recover completely, according to a local report.
Little Colt Parris lost the ability to move his right arm and leg on Wednesday, hours after testing positive for COVID-19 at the University of Missouri Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the affiliate of the University of Missouri reported. NBC, KSN-TV.
“I went to hand him the Boo (stuffed animal) and I realized he wasn’t using his dominant arm to grab him,” his mother, Sara Parris, told the chain.
“I knew something else wasn’t right.”
Doctors did tests and found a blockage in the little boy’s brain.
“The result came back and I looked at it and it was a clear stroke,” which cut the blood on the left side of the child’s brain, said pediatric neurologist Dr. Paul Carney.
In 20 years of medical practice, Carney said he had never seen a case like this.
“What was different here was a child and as I mention, there really isn’t any other case like this,” he told the dam.
The whole thing needed surgery to tackle the clot and she recovered Thursday at Columbia Hospital, Mo.
He should be fully recovered and could return home next week.
Dr. Camilo Gómez, a neurologist at the hospital, said doctors were studying the scope of a link between COVID-19 and possible neurological problems.
“The diagnosis of COVID is important because we believe that the reason (patients) with COVID, including the child, have a stroke and a variety of other problems is that they have a propensity to form clots,” Gomez told the way out.
The boy’s parents said they were grateful to their caregivers and hoped his close call would raise awareness about taking precautions to curb the spread of the virus.
“Masks and things like that, people have to wear them,” Father Tim Parris said.
“It’s important. If you don’t want your kids to go through this, people need to be more aware.”
