A prominent Los Angeles doctor tells his followers that now is not the time to travel to Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Health experts have previously warned Hawaii residents not to travel to high-risk areas of COVID such as Las Vegas, Florida and Texas.

Now, a prominent Los Angeles emergency physician is telling travelers to move away from Hawaii.

Dr. Michael Daignault is an emergency physician at a Los Angeles medical center and is a frequent expert on the Los Angeles media.

And here are his tips for those interested in traveling to the islands right now:

“I would advise people not to go now. You have to be responsible. You have to consider Hawaii to be a national treasure and you need to preserve it and protect its people, ”he told Hawaii News Now.

In a recent post on Instagram, he said travelers who could not postpone a trip should test before and after regardless of vaccination status, obtain travel insurance that includes medical evacuation to the mainland, avoid crowds, and important events and avoid high-risk activities.

“I think Hawaii of all states is such a fragile situation.”

“I advise patients, family or friends who do not travel to any place to have a high increase in COVID cases,” he added.

The governor on Monday also asked visitors to postpone upcoming trips to Hawaii, given the rise in COVID infections and state hospitalizations.

Travel experts say they do not blame the tourism industry for the recent rise in COVID cases, as health officials agree that much of the spread is due to resident meetings.

“From the beginning, COVID in Hawaii has not been generated by incoming visitors,” said travel consultant Keith Vieira of KV and Associates.

He says tourist demand is starting to cool partly due to people’s safety concerns.

Group trips have been flattened. And Asian, Australian and Canadian travelers still don’t arrive in Hawaii in large numbers.

“I think to tell visitors not to come, all it’s going to do is hurt our economy, stop thousands of people from working again and not solve the problem, but it feels good because we’ve done something,” he said. dir Vieira.

“We need to get on with our lives,” he added.

Both Daignault and Vieira say vaccination permits in restaurants, bars and events are a way to balance security and the economy.
