Bette Midler says women everywhere should sing a new song in the bedroom to protest strict new anti-abortion laws, like the one in Texas.
“I suggest that all women refuse to have sex with men until Congress guarantees them the right to choose,” the famous actress and singer tweeted on Thursday.
The idea, however, might not be original with Midler.
Nancy Sinatra told Midler on Twitter that, “My dad suggested it decades ago.”
One commenter said to Midler, “Did you know you’re my Shero?”
Actress Rosanna Arquette, however, was not so optimistic about Midler’s so modest proposal.
“But again, men with guns and angry rapes that aren’t a crime in Texas. Look at that space.” [sic] he replied with a tweet to Midler.
The U.S. Supreme Court voted Wednesday 5-4 denying an emergency appeal filed by abortion providers in an attempt to block a Texas abortion bill that went into effect the same day.
Signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in May, the new law prohibits women from having abortions after detecting a fetal heartbeat, about six weeks and before most women know they are pregnant.
The law allows private citizens to sue anyone who has helped terminate a pregnancy, including those who drive a woman to an appointment to have an abortion.
