Police say no words were exchanged between the couple before the unprovoked attack. According to the Daily News, the suspect sneaked up behind her.

The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Cavanaugh remained conscious, but needed stitches at Bellevue Hospital to sew a blow to his head.

Police say they are still looking for a suspect. No arrests have been made.

The random attack comes amid an increase in crime in New York City, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest crime report shows that while assaults in November were 5.2% lower than in November 2019, shootings and murders are on the rise.

Citywide shooting incidents during the first 11 months of 2020 rose to unprecedented levels in years, the NYPD said.

Twenty-eight people were killed last month in the five municipalities, five more than those killed last November.

This year has also seen a 38.4% increase in the number of victims killed in New York City compared to last year.

Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters during City Hall briefing earlier this month that this year’s increase in violent crime could be in an “absolute perfect storm” that affected Nova York this year.

“You can’t combine a massive health crisis, tens of thousands dying, overwhelmed hospitals, closed economy, closed schools, closed houses of worship, society does not have its normal moorings at the same time, a crisis of social justice … ‘, said the mayor.

“Come on, this isn’t like anything we’ve seen in our history and I think I don’t like anything we’ll see again in our lives.”

New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea says the city is about to set a 14-year record for most incidents of gun violence in a single year

New York police chief Shea told NY1, “We’ve made an astonishing number of gun arrests, removing guns from the streets of criminals, almost always doing so without firing a shot.”

Shea added, “But when you look three days later, four days later, these people are back on the street committing more violence with guns.”

Shea claimed that progressive policies that encourage criminal justice reform make the city more dangerous.

“Until we reach this realization as a society, is that what we want?” He said.

“It’s nice to have philosophical discussions about‘ ending mass incarceration ’and‘ ending incarceration ’, but you don’t want to do that by turning innocent audiences into prisons in their own apartments and houses.
