SAINT ANTHONY – One of the suspects involved in the shooting of a Balcones Heights police officer is believed to be detained in Mexico, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Thursday night.
“Surrender”: Sheriff identifies brothers accused of shooting Balcones Heights police officer
Wilfredo Montemayor, 27, and his brother Sijifredo Montemayor, 30, face charges of attempted capital murder. They are accused of shooting the Balcones Heights police sergeant. Joey Sepulveda in the neck Wednesday.
Salazar said the BCSO has been working 24 hours a day in this case with the help of other Texas police agencies, and believes Tamaulipas state police have Sijifredo Montemayor in custody.
“I’m waiting for proof that it even happened,” Salazar said.
Announcements
The sheriff says Mexican state police were reluctant to discuss the case with him Thursday and will work to get more information from a commander on Friday. He said the BCSO has not verified whether Sijifredo Montemayor is actually under arrest.
Salazar said authorities believe Sijifredo Montemayor entered Mexico around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, just hours after Sepulveda’s shooting. The sheriff says family members may have helped Sijifredo flee the border. However, it is unclear whether family members knew the sergeant was shot.
The BCSO went to the Montemayor brothers’ house and asked them to leave voluntarily. Some family members were arrested, but Salazar says it is unclear whether they will face any charges.
Officials are still trying to find out if any family members living in the house helped Sijifredo Montemayor flee to Mexico.
The sheriff’s office confiscated the vehicle carrying Sijifredo to the border and will look for further evidence in the case.
Announcements
Salazar says he is not sure when Sijifredo will be taken to the United States from Mexico, as he is believed to have also been taken to hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound. However, the sheriff says he is unaware of the seriousness of the suspect’s injury.
“It won’t be very easy,” Salazar said of Sijifredo Montemayor’s extradition to Bexar County.
Salazar said Wilfredo Montemayor is still on the run and is believed to still be in the San Antonio area.
Anyone with more information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-7867. There is a reward of up to $ 5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
