The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for areas of Illinois and Indiana, as heavy snowfall and freezing cold are expected in the morning.

The warning will go into effect at 6 p.m. Sunday in Kankakee and eastern Will County, Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in northwest Indiana. The notice will remain in effect until nine o’clock on Tuesday.

Cook County will also be subject to a winter storm warning that begins at 3 a.m. Monday and extends through noon Tuesday.

According to the warning, cold temperatures and occasional snow are forecast for Sunday night, with the main snow threat during Monday night’s journey. Approximately 4 to 8 inches of snow is possible in the affected areas, and areas closer to Lake Michigan could see even more snow due to the improved effect of the lake.

Wind chills of up to 20 degrees below zero can also be made in the affected counties, with overnight cold temperatures that can affect the effectiveness of salt and other road treatments, according to the warning.

A winter weather warning has been issued for Lake County, Illinois, along with Will, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy and North and South counties. The notice will take effect on Monday at noon and will last until nine on Tuesday.

Snowfall is expected to occur in the affected areas, and cold snaps also pose a threat in these communities.
