Abinader assures that in dialogue he will not accept changes on presidential election

The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, assured that in the dialogue with the national leadership to be started tomorrow he will not accept or support any change to the Constitution on the presidential election.

In a letter sent to Rafael Toribio, President of the Economic and Social Council (ESC), Abinader stated that “it is time to talk about the problems of the people and not ourselves; I call on them, and that is why I ask them their collaboration “.

“Any partisan, personal or non-priority aspirations for the country as a whole are left out of this reform at the moment … in this dialogue, we will discuss our structural reform agenda, which includes some that are already underway. and others that we will promote from this process “, the president has expressed.

What is open to debate, according to Abinader, are reforms regarding transparency and institutionalization; that of the electricity sector; that of water; of the national police; the modernization of the state; educational quality; social security; transportation; digital transformation; tax reform; labor and the hydrocarbon market.

At the same time, he noted that the issues to be addressed are broad and affect different areas, so he suggested that it was urged to participate in as many sectors as possible so that everyone feels included in the process.

“Modernizing the Dominican Republic is everyone’s job, which requires work and generosity. That is why I want to stop at something fundamental before starting this process of dialogue,” he added.

In this sense, it established three ‘indispensable’ principles by which dialogue will be governed:

The first is to ensure the separation of powers; the second is to balance the redistribution of functions of public administrations and finally is to consolidate the firm commitment of the democratic exercise by virtue of popular sovereignty.

Abinader added in his letter that the Government is determined to give the Dominican Republic an irreversible step towards institutionalization, modernity and the consolidation of democracy and to achieve this it has the whole country “to achieve this noble and ambitious purpose “.

“The Economic and Social Council has a key role to play in this process, as it is the best catalyst for having a broad vision, including all sectors, developing comprehensive proposals and channeling them for the best success,” the president explained.
