President Luis Abinader described it as irresponsible that the issue of presidential re-election is being discussed in the government for just eight months.
The statement was made by the Director of Information and Press of the Presidency, Daniel García Archivald on his Twitter account.
In the message, Archivald says that the president asked the Modern Revolutionary Party not to talk about the issue of re-election during the first two years of government.
“President @luisabinader describes it as irresponsibility and nonsense, eight months into government to talk about re-election. He will ask the party not to talk about the issue, at least for two years.”
The president in offering an interview this Wednesday to the Government this morning said that “it is irresponsible for this country for us to be talking about re-election, with just eight months since we came to the Government, with a crisis and a pandemic”.
The head of state stated that in the past meeting with members of the Political Commission of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), held on Sunday in the capital, “this was not even mentioned.”
He also clarified that he will send a letter to the president of the PRM, José Ignacio Pallissa, so that this issue is not touched on in any of the party’s meetings. “It will be discussed in due course,” the president added.
“The only thing that needs to be discussed in the PRM Government, is to fulfill the promise we make and lead this country to get it out of the pandemic, relaunch it and create jobs, along with the health of the Dominicans and to carry out the reforms that this country needs to move forward, “the president reiterated.
In the same vein, the president clarified that the commission created by the PRM to amend the statutes of this political organization, was created more than two and a half years ago; and that what is at stake is to adjust the regulations to these times.
“The PRM’s first thing is to prepare as a governing party now, to respond to its people in each community, to get in touch with the sectors and we as a government what we have is to address this crisis.” , reaffirmed the president.
On Monday, the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Pallissa, said that President Lluís Abinader is not thinking of re-election, after one of the members of the Political Commission of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) stated that a reform is proposed in the statutes of the political body to allow a new presidential term.
“The president is focused on governing, to get this country out of the crisis and to create jobs, there is no other project or other idea that moves us to this,” Pallissa told reporters covering Palau Nacional.
The also president of the PRM has added that he has seen an annoying Abinader when someone approaches him on the subject.
