Nearly 200 organizations were hacked by Russia as part of the cybersecurity attack on SolarWinds, a third-party software contractor, which has engaged several government agencies, Bloomberg News reported.
Massachusetts-based cybersecurity company Recorded Future identified 198 people who were hacked by a malicious update, analyst Allan Lisa told reporters.
Three people familiar with the investigation told Bloomberg that the hacking further compromised at least 200 victims by trying to move into their computer networks or obtain user credentials.
According to Bloomberg, about 18,000 SolarWinds customers received the malicious update. Of that number, more than 1,000 experienced a malicious code ping that gave hackers access to sensitive networks.
The identities of the victims were not provided to Bloomberg and the number is expected to grow as the investigation continues.
A SolarWinds spokesman told the newspaper that it “remains focused on collaborating with customers and experts to share information and work to better understand the issue.”

The analysis comes as America faces the consequences of piracy, which some have suggested could lead to an act of war. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency said this week that the attack posed a “serious risk” to government and private sector organizations.
Reuters reported for the first time last Sunday that the Treasury Department and a Commerce Department agency were engaged as part of the SolarWinds violation. The Washington Post later reported that the Russian military intelligence unit “Cozy Bear” was allegedly behind the attack.
