HOUSTON – A robbery suspect is dead and a spectator’s baby was injured after a shooting involving an officer Wednesday, according to Houston police.
Officers said the shooting occurred at block 7900 of the Southwest Highway around 11:35 p.m.
According to the Houston police department, officers detected a vehicle suspected of theft. The suspect did not yield and a chase began, police said.
Investigators said the chase went to Belt 8 and then to the Southwest Highway power road. The suspect crashed and stopped at a gas station, Jack’s Grocery, on Highway 7931 Southwest, according to police.
“People have to think about other people’s lives before they do things,” said Jack Abdullah, the gas station owner.
Officers said the suspect got out and jumped into another vehicle, where a mother was trying to put gas in her vehicle. When they approached the suspect, police said they had seen a gun.

Police said a 15-year veteran HPD officer fired several shots at the suspect and killed him.

During the incident, investigators said a 1-year-old baby was hit by gunfire while sitting in the back seat.
Police said officers tried to give medical treatment to both the baby and the suspect before the EMS arrived. The boy was taken to hospital by ambulance in stable condition, according to a statement.
“This lady and her son have to go through this. It’s very worrying and I’m sorry for the family, “said Abdullah.
According to investigators, no officers were injured during the incident.

“In an effort to achieve complete transparency with our community that we have served in this location for over 17 years, we are releasing the surveillance video of this terrible tragedy. We have been fully cooperative with the police. Today we are on the side of the community as we convey our most sincere sympathy for this child and his mother. “
