Hospitals are seeing more and more young adults between the ages of 30 and 40 admitted with severe cases of Covid-19, the director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, said on Wednesday.
“The data suggests that all of this is happening as we are seeing a growing prevalence of variants, with 52 jurisdictions now reporting cases of worrying variants,” Walensky said at a press conference on the pandemic.
According to the CDC website, variant strains of the coronavirus could be more communicable and lead to more serious diseases based on hospitalization data and mortality rates.
Currently, the most common variant circulating in the United States is variant B.1.1.7 of the United Kingdom. This variant is approximately 50% more communicable and is likely to result in more serious illness.
