MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith set three SEC records before halfway through Monday night’s National College Football Playoff Championship against Ohio State.
The Heisman Trophy winner started things by breaking the SEC race by receiving the garden record in the first unit of the night. His 15-yard reception put him ahead of Jordan Matthews, who set the record for 3,759 yards at Vanderbilt between 2010-13.
Smith also set the SEC’s one-season reception and touchdown records. He got his 21st touchdown in a 5-yard reception in the second quarter, breaking the tie with LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, who scored last season.
Smith also broke Chase’s single-yard record in the single season receiving later in the second quarter, surpassing 1,781 yards of the season.
