Alanis Morisette said in a statement to Variety that he will not attend the events of “Jagged,” a new HBO documentary about his life because the film includes “implications and facts that are simply not true.”
The documentary, to which Morissette contributed, follows the Canadian pop star’s journey to stardom and raises difficult questions about the music industry.
“Jagged” premiered yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival, but the Washington Post reported last week that Morisette would not attend the premiere or promote the film because she was upset with the documentary.
“I agreed to participate in a play about the 25th anniversary celebration of‘ Jagged Little Pill ’and I was interviewed during a very vulnerable time (while I was in the middle of my third postpartum depression during closure),” Morisette said in a statement a Variety. “They let me fall into a false sense of security and their sharp agenda became apparent immediately upon seeing the first cut of the film. That’s when I learned that our views were in fact painfully divergent. it was the story I agreed to tell. “

She continued: “I feel here now experiencing the maximum impact of having trusted someone who did not justify trust. I have decided not to attend any events around this film for two reasons: one is that I’m on tour. [“Jagged Little Pill” 25th-anniversary tour] Right Now. The other is that, unlike many unauthorized “stories” and biographies over the years, this one includes implications and facts that are simply not true. While there is beauty and some elements of accuracy in this / my story, of course, ultimately, I will not support the reductive taking of another person in a story too nuanced for them to ever grasp or tell. “
The director of “Jagged,” award-winning documentary filmmaker Alison Klayman, told Morisette’s absence to Deadline on Monday: “Of course, it would have been great if she could be here with us, but I’m so grateful for all the time she put in the making this film “.

“I think it’s very hard to see a film made about yourself,” Klayman continued. “I think she’s incredibly brave and the reaction when she saw it was that it was a real thing: she felt all the work, all the nuance that was there. And again, she devoted a lot of her time and a lot of effort to it. to do that and I think the film really speaks for itself. “
Insider has contacted HBO for feedback.
The Post, which has seen the film, reported last week that in the film singer “Ironic” says several men had sex with her when she was 15, early in her career in Canada.
The age of consent at the time was 14, but the law stated that the age of consent may be higher “when there is a relationship of trust, authority, or dependency,” The Post reported. Morisette does not name the people she said abused her, but she has tried to tell people before.
“I told a few people and it fell on deaf ears. It would usually be a stand-up moment, outside the room,” the Grammy-winning singer says in the film, according to the mail.
