Alex Murdaugh’s lawyer has tried to explain his client’s strange plot to hire a hitman to kill him to secure a $ 10 million insurance payment. In a shocking turn for an already convoluted case, a South Carolina man was charged Tuesday with shooting Murdaugh – a highly regarded local lawyer – in a assisted suicide plot three months after the murder of his wife and son of Murdaugh. Murdaugh ‘s lawyer, Dick Harpootlian, appeared in Today show to explain the events. “The murder of his son and his wife 90 days ago weighed heavily on him … He overcame it with the use of opioids,” said the lawyer, who explained that Murdaugh misdirected money from the law firm to buy the drug. “He was in a massive depression, he realized things were going very badly and he decided to end his life.” Believing his life policy had a suicidal exclusion, Murdaugh hired a hitman to kill him, Harpootlian claimed. The lawyer added that Murdaugh intended the millions to go to his only surviving son, Buster.
