A-Rod admits that his life and career have been anything but perfect.
Despite signing with Major League Baseball at age 17 and having contracts worth more than $ 450 million over the course of his career, former New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez says he has made a “list of very healthy bugs “along the way.
“I mean so many,” Rodriguez tells CNBC Make It.
In 2009, Rodriguez admitted to using drugs to improve performance from 2001 to 2003, which later suspended him for the 2014 season. He has also been criticized for his lack of sportsmanship.
Rodriguez says most of his mistakes he made when he surrounded himself with the “wrong people.”
“I firmly believe that you are an average of the five people around you the most,” he says.
But today, 45-year-old Rodriguez is thriving and his A-Rod Corp.’s investment portfolio is valued at more than $ 1 billion, according to the company’s website.
What is Rodriguez’s best advice for reinventing yourself?
“I think so many people spend a lot of time doing it, and I think it’s important to step back and try to architect the next, three or five years of your life,” he says.
“Number one, make sure you have a passion for what you want to do. There’s nothing that can replace it,” he says.
Second, he says, you should look for a mentor and a boss that you truly admire. “Someone who will help you, someone who has your back and someone who will teach you how to win,” he says.
Rodriguez attributes his success and transformation to his mentors, including billionaire Warren Buffett and before he died in 2010, New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
“I spent thousands of hours collectively picking out the brain and talking about best practices and, in fact, being in the boardroom, winning and losing and learning,” he says. “If it weren’t for my amazing mentors, I wouldn’t be here today.”
