Puerto Rican boxer Amanda Serrano unified her 126-pound World Boxing Organization (WBO) title with that of the World Council (WBC) without getting on the ring.
Serrano won the CMB crown after the holder of this belt, the Canadian Jelena Mrdjenovich decided not to face the Puerto Rican who was the mandatory challenger, specifically in the CMB.
This body based in Mexico decided to elevate the Boricua from interim world champion to world champion.
Mrdjenovich is also champion of the World Boxing Association, an organization that did not confirm whether it would place Serrano as the property champion. From the AMB making this move, the boricua would also be monarch of the three bodies.
“She will have her reasons for not fighting and respect for everything she has achieved. I, for my part, do not want to rest until I have all the 126-pound titles. Unfortunately, they will have to put up with me for a while in that weight and I’m sure we’ll have big battles for history, ”Serrano expressed.
The WBC had ordered a few weeks ago to carry out the unified fight between Serrano and Mrdiennovich. The two sides were informed that they had until this Friday to negotiate the fight and if no agreement was reached on or before the set date, they would begin the auction process.
“Once the negotiation process started, we were quickly informed that they didn’t want the fight with Amanda and I have to admit we weren’t surprised because Jelena always says in her interviews that she’s willing to fight whoever, until she mentions names, but never mentions Amanda, who is one of the division’s world champions, ”said Jordan Maldonado, Serrano’s coach and manager.
Serrano (39-1-1, 29 KOs) joins the prestigious list of unified Puerto Rican champions such as Carlos Ortiz, Felix “Tito” Trinidad and Danny Garcia.
“Amanda just wants to be the undisputed 126-pound world champion to give Puerto Rico glory and she will succeed, even if history repeats itself in this of evading,” said Maldonado, who added that “Amanda has been evaded being the challenging mandator of the champions Raja Amasheh (excampiona 115 pounds), Sabrina Perez, in two divisions (118 and 122), Ana Esteche, that was going to face Amanda by its titles of the 140 pounds, but lost a fight no headline and they took away the titles and now the great Jelena, whom we admire so much, went through the back door, but Amanda’s dream remains intact and firm. “
He will defend his titles in Puerto Rico
In fact, Serrano will defend his world saints from the OMB and CMB, on March 25, at the Fifth Centenary Square in Old San Juan in Puerto Rico, as part of an event that will be broadcast live by NBC Sports, under the program ‘Ring City USA’.
The event is promoted by Miguel Cotto Promotions in partnership with H2 Entertainment, Golden Boy Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.
His opponent will be the three-division world champion, Argentina’s Daniela “La Bonica” Bermúdez (29-3-3, 10 KOs).
“I’m super happy to have a date and an opponent to defend my beautiful titles. Daniela will come in search of being crowned world champion in four divisions. I think our fight will give a lot to talk about, as I understand there will be a lot of action and of course I’m ready for another Puerto Rican war against Argentina, “Serrano said.
“In 2014 I was crowned world champion in the 135 pounds in Argentina, when I beat the champion María Maderna, who had three successful defenses and this may be another motivation for Daniela, but I have my motivations because I come in name of Puerto Rico and of God. I come to triumph for our youth and for the women who are boxing, “said the Puerto Rican boxer, who has won world titles in seven weight categories.
