Amazon buys the emerging Wondery podcast signature

New York.- The e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it has purchased emerging podcast firm Wondery after adding a podcast category to its Amazon Music platform last September.

Amazon did not disclose the amount of the acquisition, but The Wall Street Journal advanced in early December that Wondery, founded four years ago and valued at $ 100 million, it was negotiating its sale for more than $ 300 million.

“Wondery is an innovative podcast editor with a track record of creating and producing high-level podcasts that entertain and educate listeners, including ‘Dirty John,’ ‘Dr. Death,’ ‘Business Wars’ and ‘The Shrink Next Door.’ , Amazon said in a note.

“When the deal is closed, nothing will change for listeners and they will still be able to access Wondery podcasts through a variety of providers,” the firm added, which still has some conditions pending.

Amazon joined the podcast business last September to try to gain ground to rivals like Spotify or Apple, who have differentiated themselves with their own products and have taken advantage of the popularity of their ‘streaming’ services to gain followers.

The company founded by the world’s richest businessman and man Jeff Bezos also owns Audible, which offers audiobooks and well-known podcasts such as “This American Life”, “Pod Save America” or “You’r Wrong About “.

Following the news, Amazon shares fell 1 0.83% amid a generally positive session on Wall Street.
