More than 100 of the huge marine mammals are seen celebrating at a large school of bait fish near New South Wales, off the south-east coast of Australia, CBS-News reports.

“The big smell, the fish everywhere, the whales bursting,” Sapphire Coastal Adventure owner Simon Miller, who saw the rare display Thursday, told Reuters.

The drone images show a mega pod of humpback whales feeding off the Australian coast of New Zealand.
Simon Miller said he had never seen humpack whales “feeding on such huge aggregations.”

“Now the whales outside were being beaten, sorting the bait shepherds and then the whales coming up and bursting everywhere,” Miller said. “It’s a pretty amazing thing.”

It’s not uncommon to see whales a megapod (at least 20 whales) biting into bait fish at this time of year, Miller said, but it’s very rare to see a pod as large as the 100-strong one seen last week. past.

“We’ve been witnessing whales feeding on the south coast maybe, like, 18, 19 years ago, since I did that,” he said. “But we had never seen them feed on such huge aggregations.”
