The Federal Bureau of Investigation has obtained an arrest warrant for a Pennsylvania woman who allegedly stole a laptop from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California, during the January 6 Capitol Revolt, with the intention to sell the device to the Russian equivalent. of the Central Intelligence Agency.
In an affidavit signed Sunday, FBI Special Agent Jonathan Lund said the agency was investigating Riley June Williams after a person described as her “former romantic partner” told authorities Williams had intention to send the computer to a friend in Russia who would later pass it on. along with the SVR, the country’s espionage force.
Lund wrote that the former sentimental couple said the laptop transfer “fell for unknown reasons” and that Williams still owns the device or destroyed it.
Williams appears to have fled, Lund wrote in his affidavit. Williams’ mother told local law enforcement in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that Williams “had made a bag and had left home and told his mother he would be leaving in a couple of weeks.”
“WILLIAMS did not provide his mother with any information about his fate,” Lund wrote. “Sometime after January 6, 2021, WILLIAMS changed his phone number and deleted what I think were his social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, Telegram and Parler.”
Williams is charged with disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds and entering a restricted building. She could not be reached for comment.
Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi’s office, did not immediately respond to an investigation. Hammill said shortly after the attack that a computer had been stolen and was only used for presentations.
Lund’s affidavit says Williams was identified after his ex-partner made several calls to the FBI tip line. The FBI also reviewed the video of the riot that appears to show Williams at the Capitol carrying a crowd down a staircase leading to Pelosi’s office.
The affidavit also notes that law enforcement in Harrisburg met with Williams ‘mother, who is not identified, on Jan. 11 after Williams’ mother filed a report of suspicious people. At one point, officers saw Williams and his mother talking through a video chat, he says.
On Saturday, officers spoke again with Williams’ mother, “who told them a British media crew had come to her home the night before, asking to speak to WILLIAMS, who was not there.”
That same day, ITV News, a UK-based establishment, posted a video on the YouTube page headline “Revealed: ITV News identifies protester who stormed Capitol.” The video identifies “Riley Williams” as a “22-year-old care worker” from Pennsylvania.
The video shows Williams’ mother claiming that her daughter has recently become interested in President Donald Trump’s popular politics and message boards among the “far right.”
Williams’ father told police Saturday that he had driven Williams to DC for the protest, but that the two did not stay together during the day. He said they returned together to Pennsylvania, according to the affidavit.
Dozens of people have been arrested in connection with the January 6 riot and federal authorities have said hundreds could face charges.
Michael Sherwin, the U.S. interim attorney for the District of Columbia, has noted that it is likely that the relatively minor charges filed earlier could be updated as the investigation continues.
Democratic lawmakers have asked the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to provide information on whether any foreign powers played a role in exploiting the attack.
