A gambling addict in India soured his wife because he refused to let his friends rape her after she lost a bet, according to reports.
The 36-year-old man had sent his ten-year-old wife to his 30-year-old wife to be raped by his gambling friends several times since October, the UK Independent reported.
“If she ever resisted sexual exploitation, her husband would beat her and hold her hostage,” she told police official Rajesh Kumar Jha.
On Saturday, the man threw acid at his wife, who managed to escape her parents and alerted social activist Deepak Singh, who took her to a police station, the Times of India reported.
The husband was arrested the next evening.
“The victim, while recounting her ordeal to police officers, alleged that her husband used to physically torture her because she could not be a mother because of her husband’s alcoholism,” police said. in the press.
The husband has been charged with multiple charges, including acid attacks, gang rape, domestic violence and illegal confinement, The Independent reported.
The couple has not been named because of laws that protect the identities of victims of sex crimes.
The news of the horrific crime comes amid a period of coronavirus blockage that has led to an almost double increase in gender-based violence, according to the National Commission for Women, the media reported.
The commission registered 587 allegations of domestic violence in India between March 23 and April 16, an increase of 45% over the previous 25 days between February 27 and March 22.
