Authorities say the incident took place on Bergen Street and Ralph Avenue in the Crown Heights section just before 9 p.m.
NYPD commissioner Dermot Shea said calls came in about a domestic incident that affected a female victim and her boyfriend.
Officials say the woman’s mother reported that the groom was going to “come and shoot the place.”
When officers arrived at the house and began interviewing the daughter, the suspect arrived and shot at the officers.
Officials say a 27-year-old officer was hit once in the back. Luckily, the bullet penetrated his vest, but it did not penetrate his skin.
“He’s in a bit of pain, but he’s in a very good mood and we anticipate he’ll be home soon,” Shea said. “I think we’ll call this the Christmas miracle.”
He says the officer, from the 77th district, has 2.5 years of service in the NYPD.
Police later identified the suspect as William Moss, 20, and said he has no significant criminal record.
They say that after the shooting, Moss fled on foot with the officers chasing him. Shea said two officers fired at least seven shots.
The chase on foot lasted a block or two before police reached the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon.
The suspect threw the gun and officers made the arrest. According to officials, the suspect was not shot during the incident.
Moss was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless danger.
“It’s Christmas Eve, it’s a time when you expect peace, you expect harmony,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “A man threatened his girlfriend, threatened her violently, said he was coming to hurt her, that’s what happened tonight in Brooklyn and since the NYPD was there, this woman is alive right now.”
The officer left the hospital on Christmas morning and was able to return home for the holidays.
The video of the scene captured what looked like carcasses on the street:
The NYPD released an image of the suspect’s firearm that was recovered at the scene.
“We have to stop saying we’re lucky … we have to start asking, why is this happening?” New York City PBA President Pat Lynch said.
