SANTA CLARA: This is what happened on the last day of the 49ers quarterback competition between Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.
JIMMY GAROPPOLO
He completed just 13 of 22 passes (59%) and threw an interception. Finished training camp with 11 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in 19 days. It’s not good at all. Garoppolo was overtaken by the rookie, even though the rookie was far from the lights off. The 49ers can start Garoppolo’s Week 1 if they want to, but they probably won’t hold out for long.
Here’s Garoppolo’s Thursday play.
1. He threw a check pass on the left floor to Raheem Mostert, and was almost intercepted by Azeez Al-Shaair. Garoppolo set the early tone to what kind of practice he would have.
2. He completed a check pass on the left floor to Deebo Samuel and won five yards.
3. He threw a pass over the head of Brandon Aiyuk, who tipped the ball to Jimmie Ward, who dropped the interception.
4. He threw a deep pass to Samuel, but the pass was knocked down and intercepted by Emmanuel Moseley. It’s as if Garoppolo wants to launch his daily interception quickly and get it out of the way.
5. He threw an incomplete pass to Ross Dwelley, who ran down the right seam. Fred Warner was covered from man to man and had internal leverage. Garoppolo needed to throw the ball into Dwelley’s outside shoulder. Garoppolo turned in a dismal performance, however.
6. He completed a check pass to Jalen Hurd.
7. He completed a 15-yard pass to Samuel.
8. He completed a 25-yard pass to Trey Sermon. This was Garoppolo’s best workout.
9. He made a 5-yard pass to Kyle Juszczyk.
10. He made a 20-yard pass to Samuel.
11. He threw a deep pass to Mostert, who was open.
12. He made a deep pass to Samuel, who opened the right side line. Emmanuel Moseley broke it. So many incomplete passes from Garoppolo are knocked down, which is one of the reasons he makes so many selections.
13. He made a 5-yard pass to George Kittle.
14. On the 2nd and 10th, he threw an incomplete pass to Juszczyk, who was open. The pace was low.
15. On the 3rd and 10th, he threw a pass to Mostert on the right floor and Mostert dropped it.
16. On days 2 and 10, we completed a 10-yard pass to Kittle.
17. On days 2 and 10, we completed a 6-yard pass to Samuel.
18. On the 3rd and 4th, he threw an action-driven walk through the back foot that was almost intercepted by a linebacker, but Dwelley took the lead and made a spectacular catch.
19. While playing with the second team offensive, 2nd and 9th from the 19-yard line in the red zone, Garoppolo completed a 12-yard pass to Samuel.
20. The first and 10 of his 30, Garoppolo rolled to the right and completed a 9-yard pass to Kittle.
21. On the 2nd and 12th of his 39 years, Garoppolo tried to throw a screen pass at Samuel, but instead hit Trent Williams in the back while Williams ran down to block Samuel. Extremely accurate shot if Williams was the target.
22. On the 3rd and 12th of his 39, Garoppolo went down to Mostert for 5 yards. A suitable way for Garoppolo to finish the training camp.
TREY LANCE
He got 3 of the five first team representatives in the red zone, which means he played more with the starters than Garoppolo during that exercise. Lance also won 13-for-19 in practice with a quick touchdown and no interceptions as he threw short passes with touch to change. He finished the camp with 15 touchdowns (12 passing, 3 rushing) and just four interceptions. It’s still work in progress, but it’s better than Garoppolo.
Here’s Lance’s Thursday play.

6. He made a 5-yard unloading pass to Hasty.
7. He threw a short pass over Richie James Jr., who tried to zero catch the ball. He didn’t even raise his arms. Just an ugly representative from all over the world.

18. On days 3 and 5, he completed a 10-yard pass to Travis Benjamin, who beat Thomas. The defense blinked and Benjamin seemed to be the hot receiver. Lance read the play and found Benjamin instantly.
