The twins have reached an agreement with short film Andrelton Simmons over a $ 10.5 million one-year deal, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Tuesday night. The club has not confirmed the play.
Simmons will take on the full-time job of the full-time twins, while incumbent Jorge Polanco will move on to a utility role. Simmons reportedly was the Phillies’ main target after they reached an agreement with catcher JT Realmuto on Tuesday.
Simmons, 31, ranks among the best defensive runs in recent history. He owns four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and also took home the Platinum Glove Award (awarded to the best general defender in each league) with the Braves in 2013. The Curaçao native was chosen for the Braves ’second round in the 2010 MLB draft and spent his first four Major League seasons in Atlanta before being traded to the Angels after the 15th season. Simmons won his third and fourth Gold Gloves career with Los Angeles, and went finishing in eighth place in the 2017 American League MVP Award voting.
Simmons has taken a step back on the plate since then, reducing .271 / .318 / .362 since the start of the 2019 season. He is a .269 / .317 / .369 career hitter with 91 OPS + during nine major league seasons. But Simmons brings the elite contact ability to the twins ’powerful lineup, standing within the top 10 percent of MLB’s skilled players, both in the whiff rate and the attack rate in each of the the last two campaigns.
