Andy Garcia starts the session to star in and produce the Cuban-American remake of The Father of the Bride
Andy Garcia has signed on to give a new twist to a well-known story, a Cuban-American remake of Father of the Bride.
The 64-year-old actor has been on board to star and executive produce the project, which comes from Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gabe Alazraki (Raven Club) has been directed, with Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner through Brad Pitt’s production Plan B.

Garcia will play the title character, a father who tries to pact with his daughter by tying the knot.
This story will be told through the particular goal of an extended Cuban-American family and its variable relationship dynamics.
Alazraki will direct from a screenplay written by Matt Lopez (Race to Witch Mountain, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice).

“I am very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and represented my Cuban culture and heritage in this story,” he said Garcia in a statement.
“I congratulate Warner Bros. for their foresight and I celebrate this opportunity they have created,” he added.
The Bride’s Father franchise spans more than 70 years, beginning with the 1949 satirical novel written by Edward Streeter.

Spencer Tracy played the main character in the 1950 film adaptation, which also starred Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Bennett.
The film spawned a 1951 sequel entitled Father’s Little Dividend, with the return of Tracy, Taylor and Bennett.
The franchise was revived 40 years later with the remake of Steve Martin’s father-in-law, which was a box office hit with $ 89 million in 1991.

Martin returned for the 1995 sequel Father of the Bride Part II, along with Diane Keaton and Martin Short.
They all also returned last year for the quarantine short film Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), where the family got together on a Zoom call.
The short film premiered on Netflix, which also acted as a fundraiser for World Central Kitchen in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
