ANAHEIM – Looks like Shohei Ohtani can’t do anything on the pitch. On Tuesday against the Yankees, the multifaceted Angelino player stole the plate for the first time in his four-year career in the Major Leagues.
In the fifth inning, with runners in first and third, Phil Gosselin stole the second pad and Ohtani the plate. Ohtani made an incredible landslide to arrive before the shot of Colombian outfielder Gio Urshella.
It was the second base stolen from the game by Ohtani, who is the favorite to win the Most Valuable Player in the American League. Ohtani leads the Major Leagues with 42 homers and has also stolen 22 bases, making him just the fourth player in Young Circuit history with at least 42 fumbles and 22 fouls in one season. In this sense, he joined the Cuban José Canseco (1988, 91, 98), Alex Rodríguez (1998, 2007) and Ken Griffey Jr. (1999).
Ohtani also has an 8-1 mark with 3.00 effectiveness and 127 strikeouts in 105.0 innings and 19 openers as a pitcher.
